The Jewish coming-of-age ceremony for girls is called a bat mitzvah. Most girls who celebrate their bat mitzvah are 12 or 13.
The bat mitzvah ceremony, like a boy's bar mitzvah, marks the time when a child becomes a Jewish adult. The Hebrew phrase means "daughter of the commandments," and it comes from the idea that a girl is ready to follow Judaism's religious law, or mitzvot. As well as religious readings and recitation, the event usually includes a festive party. While bar mitzvahs have been around since the 1500s, the bat mitzvah is only 100 years old.
